Martin, St. Lucie and Indian River school districts and five more districts are searching for insurance together. The proposed policy costs $16 million, has a 5 percent deductible per building and coverage is limited to $50 million per storm, which is to be shared among the eight districts.

Last year's policy, which lasts through the end of the month, cost $7 million. It had a 2 percent deductible per building and coverage was $250 million per storm, and had to be shared among the districts.

Indian River County Schools paid $1.8 million for both property and casualty insurance last year. This year, the district expects to pay $3.4 million for the two policies.
