However the research, which is based on AXA's own claims data, revealed Bradford was third in the table of cities affected by business crime, behind Birmingham and Cardiff.

Leeds was sixth in the table. More than half of the companies questioned as part of the research blamed crimes against business on "yob culture", while others blamed drug taking and binge drinking.

Compared to the first three months of 2005, AXA claimed the total number of crime-related business insurance claims it dealt with in the first quarter of 2006 fell by 6 per cent.
