NEW YORK, Sept 8 (Reuters) - Countrywide Financial Corp.(CFC.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the largest U.S. mortgage lender, said on Friday it hadappointed David Sambol as president and chief operating officer,replacing Stanford Kurland.

Sambol, a 21-year veteran of Countrywide, most recentlyserved as executive managing director of business segmentoperations, and has led all revenue-generating functions of thecompany since assuming that post.

Sambol has also had oversight responsibility for CountrywideBank, Countrywide Insurance Group, Countrywide Capital Marketsand Countrywide's Global Operations.

"He (Sambol) possesses the unique combination of businessbuilding, operations, and risk management skills to leadCountrywide's day-to-day operations and carry it through thechallenges and opportunities of both the current and futurebusiness environments," said Countrywide chairman and CEO AngeloMozilo in a statement.
